Tanger Inc. Named 2024 Retailer of The Year by The NC Retail Merchants Association
RALEIGH, NC (April 22, 2024) – Tanger Inc. has been named 2024 Retailer of the Year, one of two leading businesses to receive the honor from the North Carolina Retail Merchants Association (NCRMA). The awards were presented during NCRMA’s Annual Retailer of the Year awards dinner at the Proximity Hotel in Greensboro on April 18th.
In 1981, Stanley Tanger founded what became Tanger Factory Outlet Centers and shaped the course of a new industry by opening the first strip center with brand name factory outlet stores in Burlington, North Carolina.
Now, over 40 years later, Tanger Factory Outlet Centers is simply Tanger Inc., and their portfolio includes 38 outlet centers, one adjacent managed center, and one open-air lifestyle center with over 15 million square feet across 20 US states and Canada. Tanger centers represent over 3,000 stores operated by more than 700 different brand name companies.
North Carolina is home to two of those centers, one in Asheville and one in Mebane, and Tanger is also a joint venture owner of the Premium Outlets in Charlotte. More importantly, with the significant growth and success the company has seen over the years, Tanger has remained firmly rooted in North Carolina with its corporate headquarters in Greensboro where they employ more than 100 team members.
“While Tanger may not be the quintessential retailer we usually recognize with this award, there certainly isn’t a better representative of how retail can drive an economy and support a community,” said NCRMA President and General Counsel Andy Ellen.
In addition to supporting their retail partners, Tanger has established themselves as a forward-thinking company focused on creating long-term value for their stakeholders, supporting their employees, and building strong communities while considering the future of our planet.
Through programs such as TangerKids and Hometown Heroes, Tanger has collectively delivered close to $4 million during the past 25+ years to support students, teachers, and those who protect and serve our communities. Meanwhile, TangerPink has brought together their team members, retail partners, and shopping center guests to raise nearly $19 million since 1994 to fight breast cancer.
Tanger is committed to creating and sustaining a company culture that mirrors the diverse experiences, perspectives and viewpoints of their people, partners, and communities. Tanger has also shown their commitment to minding their environmental impact by taking steps to mitigate climate change through embedding energy efficiency and sustainability measures in center operations, new center development, and retailer partnerships.
“Tanger’s spirit of innovation, expertise, and commitment to excellence for their people, their communities and the environment leave no question as to why they are more than deserving of being recognized as a 2024 NCRMA Retailer of the Year,” Ellen concluded.
Along with Tanger Inc., Carolina Pharmacy was also honored as a 2024 Retailer of the Year.
